Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4 April 1972. Scott was raised an all-only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she enrolled in Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school as well as working two different job. Her goal was to be an instructor of English in a secondary school. After three years as a teacher's aide and studying her goal to become a high school English teacher fell through. Being a poet, she began performing in poetry performances live. She later teamed along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. They wrote You Got Me together. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience as an actor during her participation in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
